TG&Y stores live on in museum exhibit Community
McCrory Corp. of York, Pa., bought city-based TG&Y Stores Co. in January. It announced on March 7 that about 200 of TG&Y's 730 stores will be closed and that the remaining 500 will be converted to variety stores.

By 1960 T.G.&Y. was a subsidiary of Chicago-based City Products, which operated other variety stores nationwide. Six years later Household Finance Corporation (HFC) purchased City Products. In order to be more competitive, in the 1980s T.G.&Y. executives changed some of the outlets to be comparable to department stores.

01.23. TG&Y TG&Y was a five and dime, or variety store, chain in the United States. The chain was named for its three founders: Rawdon E. Tomlinson, Enoch L. "Les" Gosselin, and Raymond A. Young. The initials were ordered according to the age of the three, with Tomlinson being the oldest.

Home History of TG&Y TG&Y was originally a partnership formed in the fall of 1935. Central Merchandise Company provided merchandise. In 1941, the partnership was converted into an Oklahoma Corporation, TG&Y Stores Company, Inc.

The name changed to T G and Y after the merger in 1936. Current owner Dennis Muggenburg has a store called Designs by Dennis now, but a lot of older customers still remember it as the T G and Y.
