How to Get to Freedom Falls and Rockland Furnace in Venango County

Located in Venango County, Pennsylvania, Freedom Falls is a gorgeous waterfall accessible via a very short downhill hike. It is truly "off the beaten path" because there is no official trail, just a beaten path that leads you to these gorgeous waterfalls. 100 yards past the Falls are the ruins of the Rockland Furnace.

Freedom Falls is located along Shull Creek, roughly half a mile from its confluence with the Allegheny River and the Allegheny River Rail Trail, one of the best rail trails in PA. Freedom Falls is roughly 50-60 feet wide and 20 feet tall. This width makes for an incredibly impressive waterfall with many angles for photography.

Freedom Falls along Rockland Station Road in Kennerdell Falls Info: Parking: There is parking available along Rockland Station Road, but I must admit, some of the parking spots are best described as sketchy. Rockland Station Road is barely a two lane dirt road with a pretty good slope, and the parking spaces seem to hang on to the edge of the road.

This creepy tunnel was built in 1915 for use by the Pennsylvania Railroad, but not it is only open to pedestrians and bicyclists. The tunnel is not lighted so be sure to have at least a phone or a flashlight. It is about 3000 feel long and so sort of feel like you are in a scary movie when walking through it.

At the Rockland tunnel trailhead, there"s a huge waterfall ( Freedom Falls google it) and a very old mostly intact Iron Furnace. Its about !/2 mile up the acess road for the trailhead and pull off areas for parking , Its a bit of a walk down to the falls , but its worth it and it is on Pa state game lands.

Old maps indicate this village was named Freedom, although the only modern reference to the name Freedom, at least within the past several generations, is nearby Freedom Falls. Today, nothing man-made remains of the village except the old furnace and its twin wheel pits. Freedom Falls is located just upstream of Rockland Furnace, on Shull Run.
