Val Dieu (Abbey)
The Val-Dieu Abbey was founded in 1216. The Cistercian monks would settle in uninhabited areas. Their goal was to withdraw from the world, choosing inhospitable locations often in valleys where the only means of subsistence was working to clear and reclaim the land. It is important to recall that the Cistercian project, initiated by St. Robert.

Val-Dieu Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in Wallonia in the Berwinne valley near Aubel. In 1216 a small number of monks from Hocht Abbey in Lanaken, near Maastricht, settled in the uninhabited valley which formed the border between the Duchy of Limburg and the county of Dalhem; they called their settlement Vallis Dei ('Valley of God'). The abbey's original church was destroyed in 1287.

In 1997, the brewery opened its doors, where a range of abbey beers is brewed, all in the tradition of the former Val-Dieu monks. The last 3 remaining monks left in 2001 to join a larger monastery in the Val-Dieu area.

The Cistercian Abbey of Notre Dame du Val-Dieu was founded in 1216 by monks from Hocht, near Maastricht. According to legend, this uninhabited valley, in which they settled, was so unfriendly that the local people called it the Valley of the Devil. The monks renamed it Valley of God, in French Val-Dieu. The abbey took the same name.
