The radio version (Fu) was called Sd.Kfz.232 by the Waffenamt (28 built). But this model, popular for propaganda purposes, was nevertheless too heavy for its engine and off-road capabilities were rather limited. The SdKfz 232 was the Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (Fu), a SdKfz 231 with a more powerful radio. The obvious difference is the huge frame antenna that spread above the vehicle - often called a bedframe antenna for obvious reasons. The antenna served a FuG 11 SE 100 100-watt radio that had a range of 50 km or more.

The Sd.Kfz.232 features all-new toolings, and the upper and lower hull sections are made as one-piece elements via slide molds. The large armored car is composed of many irregularly shaped and angled plates, so the kit obviously requires extremely precise tolerances when it fits together. Thanks to the use of CAD drawings and high-tech molding.

The Sd.Kfz. 232 was armed with a 20 mm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon. This cannon was based on the 20 mm FlaK 30 anti-aircraft gun, and was capable of firing at a cyclic rate of 280 rounds per minute. The 20 mm cannon was not designed to defeat enemy tanks; experiments were made towards replacing it with a heavier gun, which resulted in the Sd.Kfz. 234/2.

The SdKfz 263 was similar in scope to the SdKfz 232 with an aerial framework added but its turret was fixed and lacking the 20mm cannon, reducing the vehicle's combat effectiveness. Only a machine gun in a limited-traverse ball-mount was retained. Like the SdKfz 232, the SdKfz 263 was based on the Magirus production chassis.
